Tribute & Message From The Family

Shawn M. Walder, 55, of Auburn, died March 1, 2020 at Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

He was born on December 3, 1964 to Henry and Sandra (St. Germain) Walder in Misawa, Japan. He graduated from West High School in 1983 and earned an associate's degree from Southern New Hampshire University in 2011. He lived in Auburn for many years.

He served in the U.S Marine Corps for four years, where he served as a cook for a few of those years and learned many skills that he took with him and continuously utilized to make delicious meals for his family. While in the service he spent time in North Carolina, South Carolina, Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines.

He worked as a business analyst for the legal department at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for many years. Prior to that, he worked at Moore Business Forms where he met his wife, Atomic Ski, and Nike/Bauer.

Shawn enjoyed many outdoor activities including, golfing with his son, Chris, snowboarding, snowmobiling with his buddies and exploring the woods with his dog, Yuki. He also sought out adventurous activities like roller coasters with his kids and he loved watching & cheering for them at their many sporting events. He was an avid Boston pro sports fan, loving his Boston Bruins & New England Patriots. He especially enjoyed the time spent with his wife and kids and really enjoyed their family vacations, especially their recent one to Paris.

He will be remembered for his sense of humor, for being a caring and welcoming person to all that he met and also for being a loving husband and father. He was highly thought of and loved and truly one of a kind, who will be missed by so many.

Dear Gaby, Victoria and Chris: I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I feel very lucky to have worked with Shawn for so many years. He made each day better and brighter and we shared a similar sense of humor and SO many laughs. He was always very kind and welcoming to everyone he encountered and I always found that so admirable. He gave me a lot of good life advice over the years, including not to sweat the small stuff and to cherish the time with family, friends and loved ones, which I know he did every single day. I am missing him so much right now but I find a smile creeping in as I cherish the memories. Love you all.

I am so sorry to hear of Shawn's passing. I came to know him briefly and quite unexpectedly. I moved into the Walder's old house and got a package for him. I called the number on the package and he answered after some talk about who I was and where I was he said he would come get the pack but he couldn't drive, he had just had brain surgery. I said that I knew the feeling, I had brain surgery only a couple years before and I would drive it to his house. I probably spent an hour and half with Shawn and Yuki. We talked about our brains, what we were going through, what was next for him, what to expect. It was therapeutic for me to talk to someone who had a similar experience. Our tumors are different but we both had something going on with our brains. It was a very strange sequence of events, what are the odds of that happening. He was such a nice, welcoming and funny guy in the short time I spent with him. We would check in on each other every now and then. I should have known something was up and I wish that I had checked in one last time. For the family in your time of grief, I want you to know that in Shawn's time of illness and uncertainty he helped me more than you will ever know. Rest in peace Shawn.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Sean was my best friend for many years growing up when I lived on Apple D'or Road in Bedford, NH. Sean was always so much fun. Like me, we had this pitch-perfect combination of fun and trouble/ mischief. It drove our respective mothers crazy at times (I'm amazed they never killed us, LOL) but our adventures usually involved making people laugh. We built forts out in the woods in back of his house, skated on the ponds nearby in winter, played sports in our field and lots of great 70s activities like Flashlight tag, Kick-The-Can and, of course 'Ring & Run' I drifted apart from Sean after he moved and we never got back in touch with each other but I'm grateful for his solid friendship and a lot of really happy memories in a not always happy childhood. My condolences to his family. To his kids: your Dad was a a wicked cool guy.
