Obituary

David Joseph Templeton, 82, formerly of Woburn, MA, died peacefully on August 17, 2017 at his home in Goffstown, NH, surrounded by his family. Dave was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Bertha "Sylvia" Templeton, in 2014.
Born in October 1934 in Quincy, MA, he was the eldest son of the late David, Sr. and the late Mary (McManus) Templeton. After graduating from Hingham High School in 1952, he joined the United States Air Force, serving in Kirknewton, Scotland and Darmstadt, Germany as a Security Radio Operator. Upon leaving the Air Force in 1956, Dave attended Boston University, where he was a History major. He married Sylvia, of Woburn, MA, in September 1963.
Dave worked for the United States Postal Service for nearly 30 years, starting on the mail trains in the early 1960s in Boston. He subsequently worked as a Letter Sorting Machine Operator, and finished his career working as a Window Clerk for many years, employed in several different branches in the greater Boston area, including the South End, Roxbury Crossing, Arlington and Stoneham. He retired from the Post Office in 1991.
Dave and Sylvia were avid moviegoers, and were big fans of foreign and independent films, seeing countless movies over the years. They were also music lovers of all genres, particularly jazz, blues, folk music, rock n' roll, and classical. They studied Spanish, and traveled together internationally to Spain, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Canada, Bermuda, and Mexico.
Upon the retirement of both Dave and Sylvia from the Post Office, they continued to work for several years as ESL teachers, teaching English to foreign students in their home in Woburn, and also as part of the local YMCA's Adult Education Program. In more recent years, Dave was a dedicated volunteer at the Upper Room in Derry, NH, working in the Food Pantry.
Dave leaves his brother John Templeton (and his wife Geri) of Amherst, MA; sister Carol Templeton (and her wife Selina) of Weymouth, MA; first cousin Kay Conte of Hingham, MA; son Brian Templeton (and his wife Christine) of Goffstown, NH; daughter Rebecca Sharkey (and her husband Kenneth) of Londonderry, NH, and step-daughter Susan McAvoy (and her husband John) of Hollywood Beach, FL. In addition, Dave leaves 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A remembrance and celebration of Dave's life will be held with his family and friends (date TBD). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Upper Room, 36 Tsienneto Rd., Derry, New Hampshire 03038 (www.urteachers.org/).
