Obituary

John Joseph Noonan, 93, of Manchester died August 12, 2017 after a period of declining health surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Manchester on May 6, 1924, he was the son of David D. and Rose Ann (Maguire) Noonan. He was a member of the graduating class of St. Joseph High School for Boys in 1942.
He was proud to have been the only New Hampshire resident to serve on board the famous destroyer USS Ward. This ship is known in history for sinking a Japanese submarine at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, one hour before the Japanese air attack, thus firing the United States' first shot of World War II. The destroyer continued to fight from the Solomon Islands on to the Philippines where it was attacked by kamikaze planes and sunk in the battle of Leyte Gulf on December 7, 1944. The ship was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for its service during the War
Prior to retirement, John had owned and operated the David D. Noonan Shoe Pattern business with his brothers David and Joe for many years.
He enjoyed woodworking making beautiful furniture and children's rocking chairs, traveling to Hawaii to partake in First Shot Naval Vet reunions, skiing at Ragged Mountain and trips to Switzerland to ski with Mary and dear friends. He loved celebrating his Irish heritage. He was an avid Boston sports fan enjoying games with family and friends. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the American Legion Henry J. Sweeney Post #2, as well as a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and First Shot Naval Vets.
He will be remembered as a kind, jovial man who loved his family sharing in their many activities whether it be sports or academics.
He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Mary (Pope) Noonan in 2012. He was also predeceased by his daughter Barbara Ann Noonan, brothers Thomas, David and Joseph Noonan, brother-in-law Paul Perry, nephew Paul Perry and niece Johanna Noonan Morin.
Family members include one son, Thomas D. Noonan and his wife Shannon of Manchester; two daughters, Virginia Clayton and husband Thomas of Manchester, Rosemary Noonan Disimone and husband Dennis Disimone of Burlington, VT; his grandchildren, Sean Noonan of Manchester, Ryan Noonan and wife Heather of Bedford, Patrick Robinson and wife Tonya of Manchester, Michael Robinson and wife Sarah of Manchester, Devon Blondin of Burlington, VT, Heather Jorgensen of Merrimack, Jay Jorgensen of Chester, Timothy Clayton and wife Kate of Morrisville, VT, Lindsey Clayton of NYC; great-grandchildren, Mara, Nikka, Lena, Caira, and Nola Robinson of Manchester, Jack and Molly Noonan of Bedford, Wyatt and Shyla Clayton of Morrisville, VT, Adam McDaniel of Merrimack; his sister, Mary Perry of Manchester; sister-in-law, Gretchen Noonan of Franklin; several nephews, nieces, cousins, dear friends and fellow Veterans of the NH Veteran's Home in Tilton.
A funeral service with military burial honors was held on Thursday, August 17, 2017 in the chapel at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St, Manchester. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, at the convenience of the family.
