Obituary

Mary Jane (Kenney) Christy, 89, of Manchester died October 1, 2017 after a period of declining health.

Born in Lancaster, NH on February 25, 1928, she was the daughter of Albert J. and Mildred (Knight) Kenney.

Prior to retirement, she was a kindergarten teacher in the Manchester School System for 24 years. She taught at both Weston and Youngsville grammar schools and introduced generations of students to the wonders of nature and the great outdoors.

Mary was a true nature lover who enjoyed bird watching and gardening. She was also an art lover and a longtime docent for the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester. In her younger years, she was an avid downhill and cross country skier. She vacationed with her family for many years on Cape Cod and enjoyed a good baked stuffed lobster meal. She loved Irish music, food and culture. She also loved all things New Hampshire including maple syrup, baked bean suppers on Saturday night, local sweet corn, county fairs, fall foliage season, apple pie with cheddar cheese, the coast road drive through Rye and North Hampton, strawberries and apples picked with her own hand, home made jam, NH League of Arts and Crafts fairs, the scenic beauty of the North Country and life long Granite State friends. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed.

Family members include her husband of 66 years, William Christy of Manchester; one son, John Christy and wife Dawn of Norfolk, VA; her grandchildren, Caroline Christy of Chicago, James Christy of Cambridge, MA and Andrew Christy of Chicago; sister-in-laws, Beatrice Kenney of Voorheesville, NY and Rae Catherine Christy of Nottingham; brother-in-law, Herman Emery of Lancaster; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her siblings, Eleanor Kenney of Lancaster, Dean Kenney of Voorheesville, NY, and Betty Emery of Lancaster; and brothers-in-law, Robert and Thomas Christy.

The funeral service and burial in the NH Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen will be private.
