Obituary for Roger Lee Baker

August 1, 1945 - January 21, 2018
Manchester, New Hampshire | Age 72

Roger Lee Baker, 72, of Manchester, NH, husband, father and grandfather, died on January 21, 2018 at Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation & Nursing facility.
Born in South Charleston, West Virginia on August 1, 1945, he was the son of Harold H. Baker and Thelma (Bishop) Baker and grew up in La Marque, Texas. Roger was a 1964 graduate of La Marque High School. He met the love of his life, Sharon, through the 4-H program at their high schools; they were married on November 11, 1965. In 1965 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country proudly until his enlistment ended in 1969. During his service he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, was designated as Expert with the M-14 rifle and achieved the rank of E-5. At the end of his enlistment, Roger and his family returned home to Texas to begin a new career. In 1978, he did what no Texans ever do - he moved his family to New Hampshire.
Roger worked at Hitchners Manufacturing in Milford, NH and Teradyne in Nashua, NH. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. A devout catholic, Roger served as Eucharistic minister for local hospitals and at St. Christopher Parish in Nashua, NH. Roger was an active member of the Knight of Columbus (Nashua) until his health declined. Over the years, he made thousands of rosaries to be donated to the less fortunate around the globe. Roger enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Patriots, playing bingo and visiting with friends and family.
Roger was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Sharon (Stiles) Baker of Manchester, NH; and a brother, John Baker of Houston, TX.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura A. Pettengill, son-in-law Edmund and granddaughters Mary E. Pettengill and Sarah C. Pettengill of Williamsburg, VA; his son Roger L. Baker, Jr., daughter-in-law Karen and grandsons Matthew C. Baker and Christopher J. Baker of Manchester, NH; his sister, Hazel (Baker) Evans, brother-in-law Brian of Houston, TX and their children, and large extended family.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation & Nursing for caring for both Roger and Sharon during their final years. The family took great comfort knowing they were supported and well cared for.
Roger will be cremated and interred at the Mount Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum in Manchester, NH, alongside his wife, Sharon. The family will hold a private ceremony and celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus or NH Catholic Charities, 215 Myrtle Street, Manchester, NH.
