Sandwich, Massachusetts | Age 94

Violette A. Desmarais, 94, of Sandwich, MA passed away on October 20, 2018 surrounded by loving family at Beth Israel Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Violette was born on May 20, 1924 to Elzear Cote and Marie (Provencher) Cote in Manchester, NH. She was the middle child of five children all of whom have predeceased her. Zita (Cote) St. Cyr of Riverside CA, Roger Cote who was killed in action serving in the OSS in World War II, Roland Cote, of Andover MA and Jeannine (Cote) Coscia of Lexington, MA.

She grew up in Manchester, NH and graduated from St. Antoine's High School in 1942, then moved with her family to Newton, MA where she worked for a period of time for the Internal Revenue Service. She married Aime H. Desmarais of Manchester NH on June 15th 1946 upon his return from the war. They shared 53 years of marriage until his death on February 19, 1999.

During their working years Violette was a full-time homemaker and often supplemented their income by taking on seamstress jobs that allowed her to work from home and raise their only child, Daniel, while Aime worked multiple jobs. She tended a bountiful home garden and took great pride in her home-made pickles, and other natural creations which were cherished as gifts to their extended families. Violette was an avid knitter, creating beautiful blankets, sweaters and other items as gifts, continuing to do so until just recently. When Violette and her husband Aime retired, they often played golf together and split their time between their home in Goffstown, NH, a camp in northern NH and winters in Spring Hill, FL. Upon Aime's passing in 1999, Violette lived in Goffstown, NH for several years where she took pride in volunteering regularly at Catholic Medical Center, before moving to Mashpee (Cape Cod) MA to be closer to her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed the area and was a very active participant at the Mashpee Senior Center, until a fall in January 2012 necessitated her admission to the rehabilitation facility, where she cherished watching the beautiful sunsets over the water of Buttermilk Bay. She loved participating in extended family gatherings, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Violette is survived by her son Daniel R. Desmarais and his wife Lisa of Sandwich, MA, her grandchildren, Stephanie (Desmarais) Macedo of Dartmouth MA, and Matthew Desmarais of Sandwich, MA and Emily Desmarais Boston MA as well as her great-grandchildren Zoe, Maxwell, and Violet.
